Managing your Mail on Windows Live.
Windows Live also incorporates it’s very own webmail service. As soon as you create a Windows Live ID you also create an email address. Anyone who becomes part of your Network on Windows Live can then contact you via email and you are able to view those emails on your Home page in Windows Live.
1. Go to your Home page and click on the Mail tab at the top of the page. Inside your email in box you will probably have received some greetings emails from the Windows Live teams. Despite the fact that it is still referred to as Hotmail, it is also used for @live.com addresses and live.co.uk addresses as well as all @hotmail.com addresses and can also now incorporate any email account that you may also use. Let’s take a look at one of the emails that have arrived in Newbie's inbox.
2. In order to read one of the emails, click on it to read it. As with most email programs, once you have read your email message you have additional choices that you can make. You can reply to the message, reply to all your messages, forward your message to someone else, or by clicking on the blue up/down arrows, move onto the next or previous message in your inbox so that it is visible in the reading pane. Above those choices you also have the main choices of New, (write a new message), Delete a message, Junk a message, Mark the message either as read or as a phishing scam, move the message into your Inbox folder, your Junk, Drafts, Sent or Deleted folders. or alternatively you can click on the Printer icon to print out that particular message.
On the left hand side of the reading pane are your present folders which by default consist of your Inbox,Junk, Drafts, Sent and Deleted folders. Underneath the folders list is the choice of Manage folders.
3. Click on Manage folders. You will see a list of your default folders with their corresponding size. We are going to create a new folder for our emails called My Saved Stuff. This folder will be where we can place emails that we don’t want to delete but want to keep.
4. Click on New above the list of folders and their contents and size. You are now asked to name your new folder, so name the folder My Saved Stuff.
5. Now click on Save. Your newly created folder will now appear on the left hand side in the folders list along with the other default folders.
Sending a Message.
Next, let’s try sending a message to someone in our Network.
6. Click on New. You will now be in the composing an email message screen.
7. Firstly, click on the To box to see your contact list and then add the person that you wish to send an email message to.
8. Next type in the subject in the next box below. You can also choose which font to use in your message and its size by clicking on the small black arrows in the fonts and size box.
9. Now begin typing in your message into the main area. On the right hand side of the composing area, you will notice another column titled Quick Add. Let’s try that out shall we? We’ll include an image into our message and also a video.
10. Click on Images inside the Quick Add column. This brings up the Bing search box, and as I am talking in my message about Facebook and Windows Live I think I’ll add some icons for both of them inside my message.
11. Type into the search box the name of your image search. (In my case, Facebook.) When you have decided on which image you prefer, just click on it to insert it into the message. (See picture.) You can also do a search for a video and insert that in exactly the same way.
12. When you are completely happy with your email message, click on Send.
Adding another email account.
What if you already have email accounts elsewhere such as Gmail, Yahoo or AOL? Well you can add those accounts to your Mail in Windows Live. Let’s do that next.
13. Click on Add an e-mail account from the left hand column. You will now be in the Add an e-mail account page.
14. Type in your e-mail address and your password for the new account into the relevant boxes, then click on Next. You may have to wait a few moments whilst the account is created. You will then be given some choices of where you wish your mail to go, a separate folder called (your email address) or one of your existing folders instead. NOTE. You will be able to rename this folder later by going to manage folders if you wish to call it just Gmail Account for example instead of the whole of your email address.
15. You can choose how you want any unread messages in this account to appear by clicking in the small circle beneath each icon. Once you have chosen this, click on Save. NOTE. You will be warned that if there are lot’s of messages to retrieve, it may take some time. You will also be notified that you can check your account status and edit any settings for this account by going to Options.
Related Places.
Underneath the Add an e-mail account you will notice Related Places. Let’s take a look at those shall we?
16. Click on Today and you will be taken to your Today page where you will see any new notices about your Mail, your What’s new with your Network updates, and also some suggestions for people to add to your network.
17. Clicking on Contact List will bring up the list of all your contacts who are in your Network on Windows Live.
18. Clicking on Calendar will take you to your Windows Live Calendar set up page. We will tackle setting up your calendar in the next post and also take a look at the new Web Messenger which is incorporated into your Mail page on Windows Live.
