Setting your favorite color for e-mails you type in Windows Live Mail is possible without using custom stationery. However, when you open the dialog for setting the color (by clicking Menu > Tools > Options… > Compose > Mail > Font Settings…), the color drop-down only offers you 16 default colors. Chances are high that you want to use a different color, and here is how you can.
- Close Windows Live Mail, and make sure it is really closed and not just minimized to the tray.
- Click Start.
- On Windows XP, click Run…
- On Windows Vista and above, click into the search box at the bottom of the start menu.
- Type
regedit, and press Enter. - On Windows Vista and above with enabled User Account Control, click Continue.
- Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows Live Mail/mail.
- Edit the setting FontColor by double clicking it.
- Enter your new favorite color. Use the inverted hex format, that is, BBGGRR00. BB refers to the blue value, GG to the green value, and RR to the red value. For example, a dark red could be 00009900.
- Click OK, and close Windows Registry Editor.
- Now re-open Windows Live Mail, and start typing a new e-mail. Voilà: your font color is set!
