Did that title make you look? This isn’t really about love. Well, unless you love the new Internet Explorer and the accelerators.

Anyway, a comment was left explaining this technique, but somehow, I think my explanation of using an Internet Explorer accelerator got lost in the translation. This is meant as an addendum to Greg’s fine blog "Windows Live’s Rosetta stone"  As such, it will be short.

I want to emphasize that this method of translation does not require you to leave your current web page. The selected text becomes available in your language on the spot. The picture below illustrates. You can click on it to enlarge it. I was on some random profile for this example, and I wanted to learn this person’s interests. So, I selected that text which is in Arabic.

If you don’t have the Windows Live translator accelerator installed you can go to the Add-ons Gallery: Translation  page and select one. You will have the option of making it a default provider. If you select the Windows Live Translator then you can do some magical things. Here’s how:

  1. Select the text you want to translate.
  2. Wait for the blue and white accelerator icon to appear. You see one in the picture below just above the selected text to the right of the word “Interests.” It looks like this:

    accel button
  3. Click the accelerator icon.
  4. Or, alternatively, you can right click on the selected text.
  5. Move the mouse pointer over the context menu option “Translate with Live Search” but do not click – just hover over that menu item.
  6. A fly out window will open.
  7. You will likely have to change the language pair by clicking on the “Change Language” link. You need to know the languages you are trying to read. I have had to guess in the past, and it took several tries.
  8. The translated text appears in the window. It is not copyable so far as I can tell.

And there you have it. i love love. the sea. hair calm. light music dimmed. Well, no one said it was perfect! But I think you get the gist.

It works the other way too. Here is another profile’s “About me” in English. The translation was set to Spanish. So, how does it rate Spanish speaking readers?
