This month’s Community Clubhouse challenge is about using web gadgets to customize your Live Space. Without going into a lot of detail about how I got the gadgets and my Live Space to look the way it does, here's the list of gadgets that I use on my Live Space.
The first gadget or custom module you’ll run across on my space is the HTML module at the top which is how I get the custom title banner. Using SkyDrive to host my banner image, I use the HTML gadget module to display the title graphic on my Live Space.
The second web gadget that I’ve got on my Live Space is the i’m Initiative web gadget for the National AIDS Fund. If you haven’t heard about the i’m Initiative, you should definitely sign up and participate (it's FREE). I’m supporting the National AIDS Fund through this program and I believe this is a good cause and a way to participate so I have this gadget on my Live Space to get people to learn what the i’m Initiative is about and to sign up themselves. There are many charities that are benefiting from the i’m Initiative so there are several ways you can help too.
A third gadget I have is the Soapbox video gadget. This gadget has a few customizable options in itself that allows you display different kinds of videos whether it be videos you’ve uploaded yourself, your favourite videos, or videos by tag or several other options. Mine is set to display videos I’ve uploaded to MSN Soapbox myself.
I’ve enabled the RSS feed module gadget that’s built in to Live Spaces. In this module I've added the RSS feed from my Twitter account. This brings all of my Tweets right into Live Spaces.
Lastly, I've added the Live Favourites web gadget. Most people keep a blogroll on their site to let others know which blogs they read most. There are many services that will do this for you, but I find it a bit tedious to re-input my favourite blogs over and over. So with the Windows Live Toolbar, I've added the Live Favourites add-in. This syncs my Internet Explorer Favourites bookmarks with the Live Favourites website. From Live Favourites then, I can share whichever of my bookmarks I'd like to share, or keep them private. There's an added bonus to using Live Favourites as well. There is a Live Favourites tab right in Live Messenger so you can get to your favourites list in Messenger or if you're away from home and using a different computer, just sign in to the Live Favourites website with your LiveID and you've got all your favourites handy to use.
With a combination of the existing modules that are visible and hidden in the customize section in Spaces, plus web gadgets and a little creativity, you can do a lot with your Live Space and get it to look just the way you want it to.
